Designed by Italian Architect, Aldo Spirito, St. Paul Cathedral in Abidjan, is the second largest church building on the African Continent. It was completed and inaugurated by Pope John Paul II on 10th August 1985. It covers an area of 4,500 square meters (14,625 square feet), with a seating capacity of 3,500 people and a standing room for additional 1,500.
The mordenist form of the Cathedral gives it one advantage: It could be situated on any continent and in any city in the world, and it would fit in contextually.
There are many symbolic meaning interpreted by the shape of the church, one being "Christ with his arms spread out like the famous Christ of Rio."
In general, the design (Unlike Our Lady of Peace Basilica) suggests that the primary audience is the people of Côte d'Ivoire.
